The Process
Phase 1: Learning
Before you take the plunge, it’s time to hit the books!
Diving is a straightforward sport but requires an understanding of what the human body experiences at depth.
The first phase of the Open Water course begins with self-study online learning modules that prospective divers must complete as per PADI’s guidelines.
After divers study their theory they must complete an online review examination that quizzes them on what they have learned before proceeding to the practical part of the training.
Phase 2: Confined Training
Divers are expected to finish the theory portion before the trip begins so as to hit the ground running as soon as they reach the destination.
Open Water divers begin confined training by understanding and assembling their dive gear and equipment on land, giving them a complete picture of the scuba apparatus.
Once land training is complete, it’s time to hit the water!
Divers officially begin their scuba journey in a shallow lagoon and practice key skills (explained in their scuba theory) with certified instructors that will help them in the process of becoming independent divers.
Phase 3: Open Water Freedom
You’ve studied your theory and practiced your first breaths underwater at shallow depth… it’s time to finally hit the open water!
The penultimate part of the open water certification experience is the 4 open water dives that all prospective divers must complete.
Divers will submerge to a maximum depth of 18 meters and experience the beauty of the underwater world at different dive sites with a mix of skill tests and exploration with their instructors.
Successful completion* of all open water dives, and theory, as well as passing skills tests in confined and open water training will award you your Open Water Certification!
*Certifications will be granted at the discretion of the certifying instructor. Although extremely rare, If the instructor believes a certain candidate fails to complete the necessary requirements as defined by PADI, he/she can choose to deny certification as a measure of safety and well-being.
